The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and possible further challenges.
