Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the massive storm caused extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
